The Evolution of Advertising
The world's first advertising agency was established in 1841 by Volney Palmer in Boston , but advertising was already well-ingrained into people's everyday lives hundreds of years before this. Here is a short look at the evolution of advertising:
Ancient Times
Advertising as we know it today traces its roots to the ancient times. Indian rock paintings that date back to 4,000 B.C.E. for example, are considered to be the predecessors of today's wall paintings. Before today's billboards and flyers, ancient Egyptians made papyrus ad posters while China had paper advertisements.
Middle Ages to Early Modern Times
With the introduction of new technology also came more sophisticated advertising techniques. After printing was developed, advertising started to appear on handbills and, in the 17 th century, newspapers in England .
Early 20 th Century
The next significant change in advertising came in the 1920s with the invention of the radio. Advertisers started sponsoring radio programs in exchange for a few online mentions. Because of the new media, ads also underwent changes. Advertising slogans became catchier, the ads more entertaining and informative.
Mid 20 th Century
In the 60s, with the growing popularity of TV, advertising underwent a revolution and commercials became more scientific and were given a more creative treatment. The result: unforgettable commercials that have become part of pop culture (e.g. the Marlboro Man).
Late 20 th Century
When cable TV spread during the 80s and the 90s, so did specialized channels like MTV and Home Shopping Network that offered nothing but advertisements. Unlike those seen on ordinary channels however, these advertisements actually want to be seen by people.
In the case of the music videos, their combination of popular music and great visual candy make these advertising tools a very entertaining watch. Infomercials on the other hand, though some are very entertaining, are watched more for the information they provide about the products they are selling.
Early 21 st Century
Today, improvements in technology drive innovations in advertising. With the introduction of new technologies like the flat-panel monitors and large vinyl decals for example, advertisements can now be seen everywhere from bathroom stalls to trains.
